Comprising over 200 colour plates, the book is presented in two parts. Part I considers the traditional pictures that the average modern Korean likes, along with the meanings and significance (popular symbolism) that can be deduced and appreciated as a result of present-day education. Part II, using an illustrated alphabetical dictionary format, explores the hidden meanings and references found in pictures that were produced by the highly-educated Confucian scholars who flourished during the Yi Dynasty (1392-1910). Such scholars were also educated in the use of Chinese characters, literature and philosophy and sought to impress their knowledge on others through their artworks - hence their work is often referred to as Literati paintings.

This volume will have considerable appeal at many levels, including scholars and students of Eastern Art History, Social History and Korean Studies in general.
